Today’s struggle….

I went to La Grande Chaumiere today for the second time to paint. It’s a 3 hour session with one pose.

I challenged myself to try to stick with a painting. To keep working at it. It was a tough day. I actually did 2 paintings, a figure and a face. And I did a few quick sketches to warm up.

I used a limited palette. Just alizarin crimson, yellow ochre, white and a little permanent violet and burnt umber.  I also played around with a palette knife.

I’m trying to figure out what my purpose was today. I was really just playing around with the paint. Trying to be connected. Trying not to just copy the pose. Trying to feel it. But today, I just wasn’t very inspired. The space is nice enough, but the pose was bit dull and lifeless. I think that’s what you get when the model knows she has to hold the pose for 3 hours a day for 6 days straight. Just the thought makes me bored.

So, I need to figure out how to make it more exciting. Or find a different venue to paint. Either way, I need to open my mind to the situation and look more closely and be present in the moment.  Maybe next time, I’ll sit close up.  I signed up for 6 sessions. So I have 5 more to figure out if I’ll stay at this studio or not. In the meantime I’ll try out some others too.
